Commit Lozenges Work Great

A webpage about smoking cessation is not something that you might expect to find on this site, but I recently quit smoking (6 months, now) and would like to share a little bit of my experience.

I have tried to quit smoking many, many times. Usually, I just try to go cold turkey, but I always failed. I really had given up. Then the newer anti-smoking products like the patches & Commit lozenges came on the market. I tried the patches. I had a lot of trouble keeping them on, and I still felt the urge to smoke. I needed something in my mouth. Candies just wouldn't cut it. I spent about $150 on the patches, but finally gave up. Next, I tried nicotine gum but it tasted really bad, like chewing a cigarette, so I couldn't chew it long enough to see if it worked.
Then I tried commit lozenges. They didn't taste too bad and I got used to the taste very quickly. But, best of all, they actually work. I have smoked but one cigarette in the past 2 months. I get an urge, I pop a lozenge in my mouth and the urge is gone. They did give me some serious hiccups while they were dissolving. This went away after a few weeks. Something is keeping my mouth busy as well, which is important as the habit is as much about nicotine as it is about holding something in my hand and mouth. I still get a craving here and there to hold something in my fingers, like a cigarette, but for the most part these Commit lozenges have broken my addiction. The lozenges come in 4mg and 2 mg. I started with the 4mg, used them for a couple of months and recently, for no particular reason, decided to try the 2mg. No problem at all. I have no problem using these lozenges for an indefinite period as they cost less than smoking and do a lot less damage to my body.
Sometime in the future, I will ease off of them, but now it's working so I will stay the course.

I will keep my progress updated.

11/05/07.... Still using 2mg. Lozenges. Have not been able to quit smoking entirely, but am down to a cigarette here and there. Have had no issues with the Commit and still like it.

02/25/07.... Still using 2mg. Lozenges. Haven't smoked a bit at all since my little mess up. The Commit box says not to use them for longer than 12 weeks, otherwise talk to a doctor. I feel fine and will continue to use them. I will talk to the doctor when I see him. Probably tell me to take a different pill to break the Commit addiction. Ha.

01/03/07.... Slipped up today. Bought a pack. I smoked half the pack and threw the rest away. My husband caught me smoking, but he didn't say anything but "hang in there". I haven't slipped since and am still using the commit. I WILL WIN!!!

12/21/06.... Going strong on the 2mg. Longest, by far, that I have ever quit. Yeehaaa. Cigarettes are over $5 a pack. Were I to continue, I would probably try to grow my own tobacco. Ha!

11/08/06.... Still haven't started smoking yet. Bought some more Commit and will keep using the 2mg ones.

Let me know of your experiences. I can post them as inspiration for others.

I found this on Drugs.com:
Are Commit® Lozenges just swapping one type of nicotine addiction for another?
Commit ® Lozenges do contain nicotine, however there is probably less nicotine in your daily dose of lozenges than in your cigarettes. Commit ® Lozenges give you enough nicotine to help you combat the physical withdrawal symptoms so you can cope with the mental side of stopping smoking. Also, since the nicotine from the lozenges goes into your blood stream more slowly, it produces less of the effects of nicotine that people find rewarding. In fact, when used as directed in the 12 week program, Commit ® Lozenges gradually wean you off your dependence for both nicotine and cigarettes. Remember, don't use Commit ® Lozenges together with nicotine patches or other nicotine containing products.
Update: there is a new drug that can contain the nicotine addiction at its receptors. It's called: Varenicline.

Good luck to you, if you are trying to quit!!
